Entrepreneur, billionaire and professional sailor Dick DeVos and his Volpe team scored two major victories at the Melges 32 Bluewater Series. The epic battle that featured eight strong teams from the United States, Italy and Canada, was hosted by the Lauderdale Yacht Club. Argo and Team Hydra placed second and third respectively. DeVos attributed the win to his team’s strong tenacity and leadership from team tactician Mark Mendelblatt. “This was a tremendous win for our team. We are very fortunate to have a great group of kids.” DeVos also gave props to the other competitors, including Team Hydra, who won a share of the title after winning the 2016 Lauderdale Cup Corinthian Championship.
Dick DeVos knows a great deal about winning. He learned a lot from his father, Amway founder Richard DeVos. The former Amway president now spends much of his time heading the Orlando Magic NBA team, which his father acquired in 1991 and Dick founded The Windquest Group. The DeVos family run one of the largest charitable foundations in the United States. The Michigan native is a huge supporter of education and school choice.
DeVos has given hundreds of millions to many educational initiatives in Michigan. He has also helped with the revitalization of the Grand Rapids area and awarded over 4,000 scholarships through his Education Freedom Fund. A political conservative, DeVos has helped shape many Republican agendas in his state. Aside from sailing competively, DeVos also holds a pilot’s license.
He and his wife, Betsy, have been married for 35 years. Their wealth is derived from being heir to the Amway Corporation which Dick’s father, Richard DeVos co-founded with the Van Andel family.
